YOUR SLUGS

What makes a good URL slug

A slug is the readable last part of a page address, such as best-cafe-tips in example.com/blog/best-cafe-tips. Good slugs are short, lowercase, made of plain words and separated by hyphens, and describe the page so people and search engines can read them at a glance.

DoAvoid
Use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphensSpaces, capitals, underscores and symbols such as ? # % &
Keep it short, roughly 3 to 6 wordsCopying a whole headline, including filler words
Put the main topic words inDates and IDs that will go stale
Keep it stable once publishedChanging it later without a 301 redirect

This tool cleans each title in your browser: it removes apostrophes, swaps & for "and", converts accented letters, splits the text into words and joins them with your chosen separator. The max length option cuts at a whole word rather than mid-word. Nothing you type is sent anywhere. If you change a live page's slug, set up a redirect from the old address, for example with a rule in your .htaccess file.

Frequently asked

Hyphens or underscores in a URL?

Use hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a word separator, while an underscore can join words together, so hyphens are the safer choice for search.

How long should a slug be?

Short is better. Aim for around 3 to 6 words and under about 60 characters. Longer slugs work, but they get cut off in search results and are harder to read and share.

Should I remove words like 'the' and 'and'?

Often yes, because they add length without meaning. The filler-word option removes them, but it keeps the title as it is if every word would be removed. Check that the result still reads clearly.

Can a slug contain non-English characters?

They are allowed, but browsers show them percent-encoded when copied, which can look messy. For most sites a Latin version is cleaner. Turn on 'Keep non-Latin letters' if you want to keep the original script.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Slugs are made in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
