Sitemap XML Generator
Paste your page URLs and download a valid sitemap.xml, ready to upload and submit to Google. It runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
How to use your sitemap
- Download
sitemap.xmlwith the button above. - Upload it to your site's root folder (in cPanel, the same folder as your homepage, usually
public_html) so it opens athttps://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. - Tell search engines. Add the
Sitemap:line above to your robots.txt, and submit the address in Google Search Console under Sitemaps and in Bing Webmaster Tools.
What goes in a sitemap
List the pages you want indexed: real, working pages that return a 200 status, use the version of the address you want shown (https, with or without www, as you have chosen), and are not blocked by robots.txt or marked noindex. Leave out redirects, error pages, login pages and filtered or tracking-parameter variants of the same page.
| Tag | Meaning |
|---|---|
loc | The full address of the page. Required. |
lastmod | When the page last changed in a meaningful way. Google uses it only if it is consistently accurate. |
changefreq, priority | Hints that Google ignores. They are allowed but optional, so leaving them out is fine. |
One sitemap can hold up to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed. Larger sites need several sitemaps listed in a sitemap index file. Everything here runs in your browser, and your URLs are never uploaded. This tool builds the file from the list you give it; it does not crawl your site.
Frequently asked
Do I need a sitemap?
Small, well-linked sites are usually found without one, but a sitemap helps search engines discover new and deep pages faster and is recommended for new sites, large sites and sites with few inbound links.
Where does the sitemap file go?
In your site's root folder, so it is reachable at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. A sitemap can only list URLs on the same site and below its own folder, so the root is the safest place.
Does Google use priority and changefreq?
No. Google has said it ignores both. An accurate lastmod is the only optional field it uses, so it is fine to leave the others out.
How many URLs can one sitemap have?
Up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed. If you have more, split them across several sitemaps and list those in a sitemap index.
Why were some of my lines skipped?
Each line must be a full web address starting with http:// or https://, or a path starting with / if you filled in the website address. Lines with spaces, other protocols such as ftp://, or incomplete host names are skipped and listed under Notes.
