What is CGPA and How is it Calculated?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is the weighted average of grade points earned across all semesters of your academic program. Unlike a per-semester GPA, CGPA reflects your complete academic performance from your first semester to your most recent one.

CGPA Formula

CGPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours

For example, if you earned an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course, you calculate: (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ (3+4) = (12+12) ÷ 7 = 3.43.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I calculate CGPA?
CGPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, summing all these products across all semesters, and dividing by the total number of credit hours attempted. This calculator does all of that automatically as you enter your data.
What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated for a single semester only. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the aggregate across all your completed semesters. CGPA is what universities report on transcripts and what employers or graduate schools evaluate.
How to convert CGPA to percentage?
The most widely used formula for Pakistani and South Asian universities is: Percentage = CGPA × 25. So a 3.5 CGPA = 87.5%. However, always verify with your university's official policy as the multiplier can vary (some use 24 or 25.6).
What GPA do I need to achieve a 3.5 CGPA?
Use the Target Planner panel on this page. Enter 3.5 as your target CGPA and the number of credits in your upcoming semester. The tool will calculate the exact GPA you need in that semester to reach your goal.
Does this support the USA/EU Engineering grading system?
Yes! Click the ⚙️ Settings icon and select "USA/EU (Engineering)" from the grading preset dropdown. The standard HEC-approved scale (A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0) will be loaded automatically.
Can I download my transcript as a PDF?
Yes. After entering all your university details and semester data, click the "Download PDF" button. A professionally formatted transcript is generated on our server and downloaded to your device. Downloads are limited to 15 per 6 hours to ensure fair use for all users.
Is my data saved between sessions?
Yes. All your data is automatically saved to your browser's local storage. It persists when you refresh or close the tab. No account is required and your data never leaves your device except when generating the PDF.
Can I use a custom grading scale?
Absolutely. Open Settings (⚙️), choose "Custom", and add any grade letters and point values your institution uses. You can also edit or delete existing grades in the table.
