How it's calculated
GPA is a credit-weighted average: each course's grade is converted to a point value, multiplied by its credit hours, then all of those are added up and divided by the total credit hours.

Worked example
Take three courses: Calculus I at 3 credits with an A-, Intro to Programming at 4 credits with a B+, and English Composition at 3 credits with an A.
Grade points: (3 × 3.7) + (4 × 3.3) + (3 × 4.0) = 11.1 + 13.2 + 12.0 = 36.3. Total credits: 3 + 4 + 3 = 10. GPA: 36.3 ÷ 10 = 3.63.

Does this calculate cumulative GPA or semester GPA?
This tool calculates GPA for whatever courses you enter, so it works for a single semester or any group of courses. For a running cumulative GPA across semesters, use the CGPA Calculator instead.
What grading scale does it use?
It uses the standard US 4.0 scale (A = 4.0 down to F = 0.0, with plus and minus grades in between). If your school uses a different scale, the credit-weighted method still applies — only the point values change.
