Favicon Generator

Turn letters, an emoji or your logo into a complete favicon set: a multi-size .ico, Apple and Android icons, a web manifest and the HTML to install them. Nothing leaves your device.

—
The .ico holds 16, 32 and 48 px. The ZIP adds every PNG, a web manifest and the HTML snippet.
Upload the files to your site root, next to index.html.

What this favicon generator makes

From a few letters, an emoji or your logo, it produces every favicon size a modern site needs: 16, 32 and 48 pixel icons for browser tabs and search results, a 180 pixel Apple touch icon for iPhone and iPad home screens, and 192 and 512 pixel icons for Android and installable web apps. It also builds a multi-size favicon.ico, a site.webmanifest file and the HTML to link them all.

Designing an icon that reads at 16 pixels

A favicon is tiny, so simple wins. One or two letters, or one bold shape, stays legible where a detailed logo turns to mush. Use a strong colour contrast between the symbol and the background, keep a little padding so the shape is not clipped, and check the tab preview at actual size before downloading. If your logo has fine detail, try the fit option and a simplified version of it. You can test colour pairs with the Color Contrast Checker or pick a matching set with the Color Palette Generator.

Installing it

Upload all the files to the root folder of your site, then paste the snippet into the <head> of every page. Browsers cache favicons aggressively, so after changing yours you may need a hard refresh or to open the site in a private window to see the new icon. For link previews on social networks, see the Open Graph Generator.

Frequently asked

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. The icon is drawn and converted by your browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to Curious Assistant or anywhere else.

Do I still need a favicon.ico file?

It is a good idea to include one. Modern browsers use the PNG icons, but some older browsers, Windows and a few crawlers still request favicon.ico from your site root, so having it avoids errors.

What file formats can I upload?

Any image your browser can open, including PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF and SVG. A square image with a transparent background gives the best result.

Why does my new favicon not show up?

Browsers cache favicons for a long time. Hard refresh the page, clear the cache, or open the site in a private window. Search engines can take days or weeks to refresh the icon in results.

Can I use an emoji as a favicon?

Yes. Type an emoji in the text box. It is drawn with your device's emoji font, so the result can look a little different on other systems. The PNG you download keeps the look you see here.

What is in the ZIP?

All six PNG sizes, favicon.ico, site.webmanifest and a head-snippet.html file with the link tags to paste into your pages.
