What a receipt should show

A receipt is proof that a payment was made. A useful one names the seller, gives the date and a receipt number, lists what was bought with quantities and prices, shows any discount and tax, and states the total and how it was paid. This tool puts those parts in a standard layout and works out the totals for you.

Each line total is the quantity times the unit price. The discount is a percentage of the subtotal, and tax is then applied to the discounted amount. All amounts are worked in whole cents and rounded once per step, so the lines and the total always agree to the cent.

Making and keeping the receipt

Use Print / save as PDF and choose "Save as PDF" as the destination in your browser's print window to get a file you can send. The page hides everything except the receipt when printing. Use Copy as text to paste a plain-text version into an email or message.

Nothing is uploaded or stored, so reloading the page clears your entries. Give each receipt its own number; the Invoice Number Generator can produce a run of matching numbers, and the Sales Tax Calculator is handy for checking the tax line.

Example

Two lattes at 4.50 and one croissant at 3.25 make a subtotal of 12.25. With 8% tax, the tax is 0.98 and the total is 13.23.

Frequently asked

Is a receipt the same as an invoice?

No. An invoice asks for payment that is still due, while a receipt confirms that payment has been made. Use the Invoice Number Generator for numbering invoices and this tool for the receipt you give once payment arrives.

How do I save the receipt as a PDF?

Click Print / save as PDF, then choose Save as PDF as the printer in the print window. Only the receipt is printed, without the rest of the page.

How are tax and discount applied?

The discount percentage comes off the subtotal first, then tax is calculated on the discounted amount. Each step is rounded to the nearest cent.

Can I use my own currency?

Yes. Type any symbol or code into the currency field, such as £, €, Rs or USD, and it is used throughout the receipt.

Is my information stored?

No. The receipt is built in your browser and nothing is sent or saved. Reloading the page clears it, so print or copy it before you leave.
