How it's calculated
A Unix timestamp counts seconds (or milliseconds) since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970. "Auto-detect" treats values of 100 billion or more as milliseconds, since a seconds-based timestamp won't reach that size until the year 5138.
Frequently asked
How do I know if my timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?
Seconds-based timestamps for recent dates are 10 digits long; millisecond timestamps are 13 digits. The auto-detect option uses this size difference, but you can set it explicitly if you already know.
What happens with dates before 1970?
They're represented as negative timestamps and are handled correctly — enter a negative number to convert one.
