Base64 Encoder & Decoder
Encode text to Base64, decode Base64 back to text, or paste a Base64 image data URL to see the picture it contains.
How it works
Base64 represents binary data using 64 printable characters, which is why it appears in data URLs, email attachments and API payloads. Text is converted to UTF-8 bytes first, so accented letters and emoji round-trip correctly. Both standard and URL-safe (- and _) Base64 are accepted when decoding.
Previewing an image
Paste a complete data URL — for example one starting data:image/png;base64, — into the input and press Decode. PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and BMP previews are supported.
Base64 is encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it, so never use it to hide secrets.
Frequently asked
Is Base64 a form of encryption?
No. Base64 only changes how data is represented, and anyone can reverse it. It provides no secrecy, so don't use it to protect passwords or private data.
Why can't I decode my Base64 as text?
The decoded bytes may not be valid UTF-8 text — for example, if the Base64 actually holds an image or other binary file. For images, paste the full data:image/…;base64,… URL to preview it instead.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. Encoding, decoding and image previews all happen in your browser.
